Friendship Day Celebration – PYP 1A

At ELA Green School, we celebrate milestones with the aim of developing values, character, and relationships among our learners. This month, the PYP 1A students commemorated Friendship Day with an activity which involved great warmth and creativity, epitomizing the essence of teamwork, kindness, and togetherness.

The main theme of the celebration was focused on valuing and recognizing friends. Each child was given a leaf-shaped cut-out and was instructed to write a positive note about a friend, mentioning their name. Some wrote about how their friends made them laugh, others highlighted kindness, helpfulness, and the joy of spending time together. With their heartfelt words inscribed, the leaves blossomed into more than mere cut-outs—they transformed into emblems of appreciation and love.

The activity culminated with the students collectively making a Friendship Tree. Students collaborated in placing their leaves on the branches which illustrated the way friendships develop and strengthen when nurtured with love. As the colorful tree took shape, it also served as evidence of the powerful relationships the students share and the need to celebrate each other.

Engaging in this celebration not only deepened their understanding but also actively engaged their social skills, allowing them to demonstrate appreciation in thoughtful ways and nurtured empathy by encouraging them to recognize and appreciate the virtues of other individuals.

At ELA Green School, we are proud to implement the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) that enhances the holistic development of a learner. These types of activities are in perfect alignment with the compassionate, active, and reflective dimensions of the IB learner profile. I believe our Friendship Day celebration was a wonderful occasion to weave caring and reflective learning and teaching on the celebration.

We are also reminded that teaching comes with the responsibility of equipping the child with a plethora of non-academic skills, allowing them to flourish as caring members of the community. The Friendship Tree designed by our PYP 1A students is a wonderful reminder of the collaborative learning and the powerful friendships that flourish when nurtured in a positive setting.
