Young Voices, Big Ideas: Celebrating ELA Green School's PYP 1 Students at the Student-Led Conference

Empowering students to take control of their education from the very start is a core tenet of ELA Green School. This promise was epitomized during the Student-Led Conference (SLC) where our amazing PYP 1 learners took the spotlight. The conference was a culmination of their self-directed learning journeys, and presented their work in an engaging way which delighted not just them, but everyone in attendance.

The ELA Green School is known as the Best International School in Maraimalainagar, and continues to provide a benchmark for learner-driven, inquiry-based schooling throughout Tamil Nadu. Even at such a tender age, our PYP 1 students demonstrated remarkable self-assuredness as they seamlessly shared their understanding of three transdisciplinary themes: How the World Works, How We Organise Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet.

Celebrating Inquiry and Agency

The Student Led Conference is a distinctive component of the IB framework that allows learners to reflect on their learning and share it with their families and fellow students. It was heartwarming for all of us at ELA Green to see our PYP 1 learners fully embrace the responsibility of guiding their families through portfolios, projects, and interactive displays showcasing their work.

With the help of hands-on experiments and observations, students learned scientific principles for the theme How the World Works. From learning the qualities of different materials to grasping natural phenomena, our young learners began to appreciate different aspects of the world.

With How We Organise Ourselves, students examined the systematic and communal frameworks that govern our daily lives. Through role-play, charts, and collective models, they illustrated the functions of schools, cities, and services as well as how each individual contributes to seamless operations within a given system.

Lastly, students expressed reflections into environmental issues, conservation, and the significance of living sustainably under the theme Sharing the Planet. Projects included recycling for art, water conservation posters, and presentations about biodiversity which demonstrates ELA Green’s dedication to environmental education.
