Celebrating Connection Through Art: MYP 3 Students at Ela Green School Create Postcards of Friendship and Community

 

At Ela Green School learning is not limited to books and classrooms. Recently, our Middle Years Programme (MYP) 3 students participated in an interdisciplinary project that integrated artwork, identity, and interaction with the community. Under the banner of “celebrating connection,” students have been working on postcard projects that embedded these themes: friendship, empathy, and global understanding enhancing their awareness about different cultures and their views.

This VAP project applies Gillian’s and McKenzie’s beliefs and understanding of MYP aims and objectives, as well as the concept of inquiry which is an integral part of IB principles, on a reasonably large scale project – extend their horizons, put together creativity with a sense of participation and work within the wider community. In this article we shall analyze how this activity developed, why it is of importance educationally, and how it relates to our ethos in our capacity as one of the Best Schools in Maraimalainagar and as an International Schools in Chengalpattu

Inspiring Global Connections Through Art

In the age of globalization, the youth needs to learn the significance of having an imaginative approach towards the understanding of various cultures. In the development of the postcard project, the aim was to make the students consider the idea of how influential human interactions can be, more so in a time full of technology. Since the MYP 3 students did physical postcards, they were able to concentrate on specific details within their messages, such as word and artistic designs.

Students created postcards depicting positive and unifying messages to uplift others. The fascinating aspect was, that every postcard was different, showcasing the owner’s character and inventiveness. Through the eyes of some students, the world was going around in different directions with different scenes while others painted empathy, peace, and kindness. In other words, every card became a student's personal touch on a concept depicting what it means to “connect”.

Learning Beyond Borders at a Top IB School in South India

As one of the leading IB schools in South India, Ela Green School’s middle-year program is based on the principles of experiential learning and international mindedness. This project was a true embodiment of this method, giving students something to think about in terms of how people around the world communicate even when they are separated by distance and culture. It, additionally, enabled them to investigate the different ways in which different nations understand the notions of friendship, family, and community through symbols and other forms of art.

Such projects stimulate students’ creativity and are important in imparting key skills which the IB seeks to achieve. For our students, the postcard activity was an opportunity to practice key IB learners profile traits such as openness, empathy, and risk-taking. They had to think out of the box, apply critical thinking, and combine visual and written skills in addressing their audiences on their postcards. Such capacities are central to an IB education and help to prepare graduates for a world that is increasingly multilayered and complex.

Building a Sense of Community and Belonging

In this project about the theme “celebrating connection” emphasis was put on the need to focus on getting to know each other in the school and out of it. Whilst designing the postcards, the pupils told each other stories and endeavored to see things through one another’s eyes which in return brought them closer and made them embrace differences within their classroom.

The pupils were initiated into the meaning of connectedness by our faculty who were very active participants in the process. In groups, students examined the idea of being kind as an important thing to do, the value of family and friends, and the use of icons as emotions that transcend culture. This was an eye-opening experience for them and a lesson well learned, connection is a means through which the world can be a better place for all.

Showcasing Creativity and Reflection at Ela Green School

By working on this postcard activity, students fused creativity with self-reflection which is one of the core tenets of our educational philosophy as an IB school. So this time, our MYP 3 students not only practiced their artistic abilities on canvasses but reflected on the theme of what unites them with other people and what can help in making this world more peaceful and harmonious. Hence as one of the foremost International schools of Chengalpattu, we aim to provide such projects to raise emotionally intelligent and global citizens in the future.

Postcards have become the medium to express their emotions and the links that each of our students attaches so much importance to, and also the dreams of an interconnected world. And the activities that are shown in the video, represent us as educators in the most diverse and comprehensive way.
